A Remedy For
- Prostate enlargement
Saw Palmetto eases the urinary difficulties that develop when an enlarged prostate obstructs the exit from the bladder. Although this medication promotes normal urination, it will not cure an underlying disease, so it's advisable to see your doctor about other forms of treatment.
What It Is; Why It Works
Benign prostate enlargement appears to be triggered by abnormally high levels of the male hormones testosterone and dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in prostate tissue. Saw Palmetto reduces absorption of these hormones within the prostate gland, while reducing inflammation and swelling. All three actions serve to relieve bladder obstruction and improve urinary flow.
Saw Palmetto's popularity has been on an extraordinary roller coaster ride throughout the 20th century. Widely used under the name "Serenoa" until World War II, it was then completely forgotten until its rediscovery in the 90's. The plant, a low, scrubby palm, is native to the coastal regions of the southern U.S., from South Carolina to Florida and in southern California. Its medicinal value lies in the oily compounds found in its berries.
At least three rigorous clinical trials have confirmed Saw Palmetto's ability to remedy urinary difficulties. In one comparative trial, it proved equal to the prescription drug Proscar as a source of symptomatic relief (although, unlike Proscar, it had no beneficial impact on the size of the prostate).
Avoid If...
No known medical conditions preclude the use of Saw Palmetto. However, because of the herb's hormonal effects, caution is advisable if you have any form of cancer that's stimulated by hormones.
Special Cautions
At recommended dosage levels, side effects are rare. A few stomach complaints have been reported.
Possible Drug Interactions
Check with your doctor if you are taking any hormonal medications or adrenergic drugs such as the asthma medications Alupent, Brethine, Proventil, and Ventolin. Your dosage may need adjustment.
Special Information If You Are Pregnant or Breastfeeding
Although women are unlikely to use this herb in any event, they should strictly avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding due to its hormonal effects.
How To Prepare
The most effective preparation is a commercial extract of the berry's oils. The crushed berry may also be taken--but not as a tea; the medicinal oils will not dissolve in water.
Typical Dosage
The usual daily dosage is 1 to 2 grams of crushed Saw Palmetto berry or 320 milligrams of Saw Palmetto extract.
Potency of commercial preparations may vary. Follow the manufacturer's instructions whenever available.
Overdosage
No information on overdosage is available.**
